The after hair transplant period is one of the most frustrating for those candidates, who already decided on the surgery. We realize how you are excited. A few final steps are needed to reach your dream look. Yet, long recovery time is waiting for you. On this page we will share very detailed information answering the following questions: Why is this period so hard? What should be paid attention to? What are the care instructions?
Weekly and Monthly Progress After Hair Transplant
On this page, we will share information about the post hair transplant period starting immediately after the procedure and lasting 1,5 years. you will find answers to all your questions. Do not get disappointed because of the process being this long. The recovery period is individual for every patient, you will not face all of the described moments. We advise you to stay in touch with the clinic where you had your transplant made during this period. Let us study the post- hair transplant time day by day, week by week, and month by month.
Fist Days After the Hair Transplant (day 1-5)
You left the surgery room. You can move to your home or hotel. Grafts are implanted. The bandage will be applied to your nape to press your donor area (to avoid bleeding). Just implanted grafts are new and they look blooded. Fortunately, grafts dry fastly. There is no strong pain after the hair transplant. Even if some hurting occurs, a simple painkiller releases it. If possible, sleep on 2 pillows the first few nights. In some cases, patients face little bleeding in the donor area. This is normal. At AHD you will be provided a special sterile pillowcase. You will cover the pillow with it to avoid infections and sink.
Day 2-7 After the Hair Transplant
The bandage is taken off on the next day. As we do the transplant only by pen implanter, we do the first washing at our clinic (1st day after the procedure). Some clinics practicing the classic FUE do the first washing on the 3rd or 4th day after surgery. In our opinion, one of the advantages of the pen is that you should not wait 3-4 days. We strongly advise you to wash your hair after surgery for the first time at the place where you had the surgery. You can find more details on washing on the according page.
The most crucial time after the surgery is the first 48 hours. It is called epithelialization, you must be very careful with the grafts not to defect them. You should avoid nobs. Do not sleep faced-down. Sometimes, patients sweep the pillow by transplanted hair while sleeping. If there is bleeding in the morning, unfortunately, it means that the grafts fell out.
In 2-3 days after the surgery, you may face so-called oedema, the swelling. We described this complication on our page dedicated to the swelling after hair transplants. Swelling is a usual postoperative consequence, but some clinics miss to inform about it and patients get into a panic when it occurs. Its reason is the solution and anesthesia injected while the procedure. In the Dhi method, no solution is needed which is why swelling occurs slightly or absent at all. If you face swelling, it will pass in 4-5 days.
You should wash your hair the way your head was washed at the clinic. Moreover, you can wash it 3-4 times a day during the summer. You should wear the hat that you will be given when going outside. It will camouflage the view and protect your hair from the direct sunlight. Safari type hats are ideal here. Do not pull the hat over the head, just gently put it on.
Day 7-10 Hair Transplant. Recovery Period
By this time the scabs will be cleaned because of periodical washing. Do not get upset if the scabs will still remain, the recovery period continues individually at each patent. You may have itching in the donor and recipient areas, this is completely normal. Scabs are not notable at all in female hair transplants or unshaven hair transplants because of the long hair.
A very fast recovery period is waiting for you right after the procedure. The first time after the hair transplants you will have scabs on the recipient area that will be cleaned by the 10th day. The donor area gets cured very fast as well. The grafts number extracted from the donor area should not be exaggerated. Additionally, the follicles must be collected homogeneously. If the surgery was made qualitatively and by thin punches, nobody will be able to recognize scars in the donor area. Moreover, people who did not see you for 10 days would not note that you underwent a hair transplant. They will see that you have shaved only. All in all, scabs cleaning lasts 10 days, and the appearance after it makes patients happy.
If any swelling occurs during this period, it must pass immediately. You may also have itching for 15-20 days.
Many of our patients are afraid to wash the head because they think that implanted hair may fall out. They just pour the water on the head and leave shower. If this is your case, get in touch with your clinic and ask them to help you to clean the scabs.
Day 15-20 After the Surgery.
Now a very frustrating period starts. This is shock loss. Patients do not want to accept hair loss after the transplant psychologically. We dedicated a whole article to the shock hair loss on our website.
The pain in the donor and recipient areas that may periodically occur passes completely.

How Does the Redness Pass After the Hair Transplant?
The hair transplant is a small medical intervention. There may be redness after the hair transplant. This is normal. Redness is also an individual complication and differs from person to person. It usually lasts from 15 days to one month. It is usually seen and continues longer in patients with light skin; approximately 3-4 months. To decrease redness, you should:
- Wash your hair with warm water instead of hot
- Keep your head away from direct sunlight (take on the hat when going outside)
If you have very aggressive redness, then consult with your clinic. Sometimes redness progresses in the donor area too. Creams containing cortisone are pretty helpful. We do not advise you to apply any creams or take medication without consulting your doctor.
If you had the hair transplant from the beard, the redness passes faster (usually, recovers in 3-4 days). Following picture shows redness and pimples in the 2nd month after the procedure.
Bad hair transplants also result in redness. Such complications as folliculitis or skin necrosis can develop in the recipient area. The reason for necrosis is the use of adrenaline in big volumes, which leads to poor blood circulation and nutrition deficiency. Permanent redness and color change may occur. Necrosis means a dead cell. Hair does not grow in that area. To prevent bleeding in channel method surgeries, doctors inject adrenaline that destroys the capillary vessels. As there is very little bleeding in pen implanter surgeries, no adrenaline is needed. This is why we have not faced necrosis yet. Unfortunately, if necrosis develops, the patient needs to amputate the area surgically. Patients are always unhappy with bad hair transplants or different complications, which is reasonable. In the pictures below you can see the necrosis developed in 2 patients who made the hair transplant in some local clinics.

Does the Implanted Hair Fall Out?
There is a false opinion that the implanted hair does not face loss. The most important point is to implant the strongest follicles, that is what we do. If the donor hair does not fall out, it will also remain the same on the recipient area. If in course of time the hair in the donor area gets weak and falls out, the same happens with transplanted grafts.
