Those who have hair transplantation rightfully want the hairless area to be completely covered. This is not always possible in one session. Therefore, the number of those who consider a second session of hair transplantation is quite high. There may even be those who apply for a third or fourth session depending on the need. So those who are considering a hair transplant may rightfully ask the following question. Why shouldn’t my hair loss problem be solved in one session? Why can’t a procedure that can be done in two sessions be done in one go? These are very legitimate questions. However, we must do what we know to be medically correct. Let’s answer these questions briefly now.

What is a Session in Hair Transplantation?
In hair transplantation, the phase of taking and transplanting the planned number of grafts is called a session. When we say 1 session, it can take 1, 2 or even 3 days. Even if a hair transplantation takes 3 days, it is 1 session for us. Day and session should not be confused.
- We do not find it appropriate to transplant more than 2000 grafts in 1 day. The duration of a hair transplant should not exceed 6-7 hours. On average, 2000 grafts can be transplanted in 6-7 hours. In days requiring more than 2000 grafts, it is more appropriate to divide the process into days.
- When the donor area capacity is calculated, it is not right to take too many from the donor area in one session. Otherwise, unwanted bad images are likely to occur in the donor area. Tissue damage and permanent damage are possible in the donor area.
- Mathematical calculations should be made before hair transplantation. The number of grafts to be taken from the donor area and the area of the hairless area should be calculated. For example, 10,000 grafts of hair transplantation can be planned. The donor capacity may also be sufficient for this. However, it is never right to take and transplant such a high number of grafts in one session. The ideal is to plan 2nd or 3rd sessions at different times.
What are the Situations in Which 2nd Session Hair Transplantation is Performed?
We can classify the situations that require a second session in hair transplantation as follows.
- If a high number of grafts such as Norwood 5-6 are required, it is more appropriate to divide these people into two or three sessions of surgery.
- It would be more appropriate to perform the crown area hair transplant in a separate session.
- People who continue to lose their hair should be informed in advance that they may need to have another hair transplant in the coming years. Especially those who have had a hair transplant at an early age will need a second hair transplant session.
- In women, 1500-2000 grafts can generally be taken in one session. This number may not always be enough. Women may need a second session of hair transplantation in the following years.
- A hair transplant can be performed again to correct a poorly performed hair transplant.
A significant portion of those who apply to our clinic are people who have previously had hair transplants elsewhere. The number of patients who are not satisfied with their hair transplants and have applied for a second session is not small. The vast majority of people who have previously had hair transplants with the FUT method apply for a second session transplant.
When can the second session of hair transplantation be performed?
If a person is planning to have another hair transplant, it would be appropriate to do it 10-12 months after the first transplant. This period needs to pass for the donor area to recover. The number of grafts planned for the second session will generally be less than the first session. Here, the doctor who will perform the transplant should plan according to the capacity of the donor area. Transplanting from beard hair or chest hair in the second session is a very logical idea.
How many sessions does a hair transplant take? What is the maximum amount of hair that can be transplanted?
This is completely dependent on donor capacity. If needed, if the donor area is suitable for grafts, it is possible to perform hair transplantation from the nape in up to 3-4 sessions. We have many patients who have had a total of 8000-10000 grafts of hair transplantation in our clinic. These numbers have been reached in 3-4 sessions in different years. It is possible to go up to 5-6 sessions in large areas such as Norwood 6-7 by using beard and chest hair. It is possible to learn the comments and experiences of those who have had hair transplantation for the second time from forum sites.
