Those who want to have a hair transplant wonder whether they will feel pain during the transplant. The question of whether hair transplant hurts is definitely asked by patients during consultations. Many people are hesitant about hair transplantation, thinking that there is no painless hair transplant. We are telling you emphatically. Yes, it HURTS. Let’s not forget that there will definitely be pain during the anesthesia procedure in hair transplantation, to a greater or lesser extent. If they tell you that you will not feel any pain, do not believe them. Each person has their own pain threshold. People with a low pain threshold feel this pain quite a lot during the anesthesia procedure. On the contrary, people with a low pain threshold do not care much about the pain felt. The pain completely disappears shortly after the anesthesia procedure. We will examine the subject of anesthesia in hair transplantation in detail in another article.
Is Painless Hair Transplant Possible?
Now, what is hair transplant anesthesia? Is painless hair transplantation possible? How can hair transplantation comfort be increased with the right anesthesia? Let’s look at the answers to these questions.
There are 3 methods used in hair transplant anesthesia. These methods
- Local Anesthesia: The vast majority of hair transplants are performed with local anesthesia. The area where the grafts are taken and the area where the transplant will be done are anesthetized.
- Sedation: Also known as sleep hair transplantation. The patient’s consciousness temporarily disappears. At that moment, he does not remember the procedure performed on him.
- Needle-Free Anesthesia: Anesthetic drugs are administered subcutaneously with new generation pressure pumps.
Local anesthesia is the most commonly used anesthesia method. Here, consciousness is completely open. The person talks, chats, and is aware of the entire procedure. In other words, there is absolutely no anesthesia known among the public. A needle will be inserted into the skin and the nerves in the head area will be temporarily blocked. Therefore, the sensation of pain will be completely eliminated temporarily. Patients express this as my head is like concrete, I won’t feel it if I hammer a nail into my head.
In the FUE method, local anesthesia is applied in two different ways.
- Firstly, while the hair follicles are being collected, the nape area is anesthetized and the hair follicles are removed.
- Then the area to be transplanted is determined and this area is also anesthetized. In other words, two separate areas will be anesthetized and the person will feel pain and soreness twice during anesthesia. The average duration of pain felt here is between 30-60 seconds.
What is Needle-Free Hair Transplantation?

It is a method designed to reduce the pain felt during local anesthesia. In fact, needle-free hair transplantation is also a type of local anesthesia. The aim here is to increase the comfort of the transplant. The anesthetic substance is not given with a needle while it is given under the skin. The anesthetic substance is given very quickly with the help of pressurized pumps. However, the pain here is like a fly bite, a very light pain is felt. Later, the local anesthesia procedure is applied again, but since the skin is partially numb, not much pain will be felt. It is a useful method especially for those with a very low pain threshold. We do not use this method much for those with a good pain threshold.
Conclusion: Hair transplantation is not completely painless. There will be some pain during the numbing. Afterwards, there will be no pain. He who loves the rose will bear the thorn. However, with modern methods, the feeling of pain can be reduced to a minimum.
