In this article, we will provide detailed information about beard transplantation. We believe that when you read our article, you will find answers to all the questions that people who are considering beard transplantation are waiting for.
The hairs that grow on the chin, cheeks and neck of men are called beards. Men see beards as their own make-up and aesthetics. A dense beard is an important sign of self-confidence and masculinity for men. Hair growth generally begins at the age of 20. If there is no beard growth after the age of 25, the probability of responding to medical treatment is quite low. So what are the ways to achieve a bearded appearance for those who do not have a beard or have sparse beards? Let’s examine them now.

The transfer of roots taken from the person to hairless or sparse areas in the cheek, chin and neck areas is called beard transplantation. Generally, beard and mustache are transplanted together. This procedure is quite logical and a definitive solution for suitable people. Statistics show that interest in mustache and beard transplantation is rapidly increasing every year. This operation is a surgical treatment method performed due to aesthetic concerns. So who is suitable for this procedure and who will benefit permanently? Let’s look at these now.
What are the factors that affect success in beard transplantation?
- The most important factor that determines the success of this procedure is the number of grafts to be taken from the donor areas. First of all, there must be a sufficient number of roots that can be taken.
- The size of the area where the beard will be planted and the number of roots to be placed in 1 square centimeter;
- The thickness of the grafts will directly affect the success rate.
- Planting should be done in accordance with the rules.

Who can have a beard and moustache transplant?
We can divide the people recommended for this operation into 5 groups.

- Beard Transplantation in Beards: Men who are completely hairless in the face or moustache area due to hormonal factors are defined as beardless. This procedure is a very good solution for those who complain about beardlessness.
- Beard and moustache sparseness: In some men, facial and chin hair grows sparsely and irregularly. In some areas, it does not grow at all. People in this group who apply to us the most to fill the gaps in their beards.
- Transgender People: Women who want to change their gender and become men can request this procedure.
- Correction of bad and faulty beard transplants: A non-artificial appearance is extremely important. If the technical details are not followed, you may end up with a standing beard.
- Beard transplantation to scar and burn areas: There may be regional scar areas on the face due to traffic accidents, surgeries and burn scars. These local areas negatively affect the person’s psychology. In such cases, very successful results are obtained.

Preliminary examination
- First of all, the doctor should evaluate whether the person is suitable for beard transplantation.
- If a hormonal condition is suspected, laboratory tests may be required.
- In candidates suitable for transplantation, the number of grafts needed is first calculated.
- Then, the donor areas from which the roots will be taken are determined.
- If hair transplantation is also considered along with beard transplantation, the planning of the roots should be done in a balanced way.
- If the person is overly excited, sedatives may be given.
How is Beard Transplantation Done?
The logic and procedure in this process is the same as in classic hair transplantation. The aim of the operation is to thicken the hairless or sparse areas. Now we will examine how beard transplantation is done and its stages with illustrated examples.

- Before the application, the area to be transplanted is drawn and planned. A design suitable for the person’s facial structure must be made. The patient’s opinion must be obtained for the appropriate facial style.
- Depending on the need, 300 to 5000 grafts are collected from the hair or beard donor area with the FUE technique.
- These collected grafts are transplanted one by one to the planned area using the techniques specified below.
- The procedure of collecting and planting the roots is done under local anesthesia.
Where are the roots taken for beard transplantation?
- In this procedure, generally two donor areas can be used. These are;
- Beard to beard graft transplantation: For small areas, dense and strong beard grafts in the chin and throat area are used.
- Hair to beard transplantation: If a large number of grafts are required, hair roots are the first alternative. For example, in the case of beardlessness, it is more logical to prefer hair roots.
What are the methods used in beard transplantation?
The methods used in hair transplantation can also be used here. Let’s briefly recap them now.

- FUE beard transplant (Channel Method): In the area where the transplant will be made, channels are opened as many times as the number of grafts. And the roots are placed one by one into these opened channels.
- Stick and Place (Needle Transplantation): A hole is opened with a syringe and then the graft in the pen is transplanted into the hole one by one by the surgeon. It is also known as the percutaneous technique in our country.
- Pen Dhi Technique: This is the best and most successful method that we prefer.
What is DHI Beard Transplant and How is it Done?

The Dhi method is a transplant method that is performed without touching the roots, using implanter pens. In our clinic, hair, beard, moustache and eyebrow transplants have been performed using the Dhi technique since 2010. In this transplant technique, the procedure is as follows.
- First, a graft is placed into the pen by the assistant personnel.
- The surgeon makes a hole using a pen known as an implanter pen.
- Then, it simultaneously releases the graft inside the pen into the drilled area.
- This procedure is repeated periodically according to the number of grafts to be transplanted.

The pen technique called Choi pen provides us with many advantages in beard transplantation. If we list these advantages:
- Post-transplant recovery is faster than other methods.
- Since the tips are very thin, the scar is not visible at the hair roots.
- Bleeding is very little compared to other methods.
- It can be planted quite frequently.
- It is easier to open channels at right angles. Thus, it is not difficult to obtain a natural appearance.
How many beard roots can be transplanted?
- Transplantation to be done on the corners –> Even 5000 grafts can be transplanted. However, there must be a sufficient number of grafts in the donor area. A transplant with such a high number of grafts is completed in 2 sessions, i.e. 2 days. In fact, to obtain a denser appearance, it can be transplanted again after 1 year. Below you can see a 5000 graft beard transplant operation performed on someone with a corner. The length of the transplanted roots on the 10th day is approximately 2 mm.

- To thicken sparse beard –> 500-2000
- For those who want a goatee look on their chin –> 300-400
- The number of grafts required depends entirely on the width of the area to be transplanted. The duration of the operation also depends on the number of grafts. For example;
- For each empty cheek –> 750-1500
- -> 200-350 can be planted in each favorite area.
- In regional transplants such as burn wounds and surgical scars –> 100-1000 grafts are sufficient, depending on the size of the area.
- In regional transplants such as burn wounds and surgical scars –> 100-1000 grafts are sufficient depending on the size of the area. For example, 200 grafts were transplanted to the scar below.

Do Transplanted Beards Look Natural?
First of all, we should state that beard transplantation is a risky procedure. If this procedure is not done according to its rules, a natural and aesthetic appearance cannot be achieved. There are 3 basic rules for achieving naturalness in beard transplantation. If we look at these rules;

- Single roots should be used: Single grafts should definitely be planted, especially in the beard line in the cheek area. Multiple grafts taken from the nape of the neck should definitely be separated into single roots before planting.
- Thin incisions should be made: Very thin incisions should be made for the holes where the roots will be placed. Otherwise, pit-shaped scars and bulges will appear at the beard roots. When performing this procedure, we prefer 0.6 and 0.8 mm diameter choi pens. If thin tips are used, the possibility of scarring after the operation is low.
- Angles and directions must be absolutely correct: The most basic rule for achieving naturalness in beard transplantation is to place the roots in the correct direction and angles. Especially in the cheek area, the directions are downward. These roots should be planted 5-10 degrees horizontally to the skin. The hairs on the chin and throat have their own angles. These angles must be strictly adhered to during transplantation. In transplantation with the pen method, it is easier to catch the correct angles. The visual below shows the importance of determining the angle and direction during transplantation.
If a beard transplant is performed without following the 3 rules above, be prepared for an unsuccessful result. In this case, it is highly likely that you will encounter a beard image consisting of double and triple roots and growing upright. Unfortunately, there are many people who regret having a beard transplant due to a bad and unnatural appearance.
If the angles are opened incorrectly, in this case, it is necessary to correct the steep beard directions. For this, the incorrectly planted roots should be removed one by one with the FUE method. It will definitely not be corrected in any other way. However, correcting this incorrectly planted planting is quite laborious and difficult. It may take several sessions to remove the incorrectly planted roots. Unfortunately, there are very few doctors and clinics that can correct a faulty and unsuccessful beard transplant. Many people apply to our clinic to correct steeply growing beards.

Comments of Those Who Have Had Beards
Those who are considering beard transplantation want to benefit from the experiences and comments of those who have had this procedure done before. This is a very justified request. Naturally, they look for answers to questions such as where is the best doctor or the best center. For this, first of all, if there are people around you who have had beard transplants, research them and benefit from their experiences. If you cannot find anyone around you, examine the recommendations or complaints on forum sites. In addition, there is the opportunity to get information about prices on these forum sites.
In the video below, you can watch an interview video of a patient to whom we transplanted a beard. The video with our patient is 1 year after the operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the appropriate age for a beard transplant?
In beards, it would be appropriate to wait until the age of 25. In beards that do not respond to medical treatment, the best solution from this age is to have a beard transplant. In cases such as burns and scars, it can be easily applied even at the age of 18.
In cases of sparse beards, a thickening procedure can be performed starting at the age of 20.
-
Is beard transplantation painful?
Since local anesthesia is used during the transplant, there will definitely be a feeling of pain during the anesthesia. This pain, which is felt depending on the pain threshold, varies from person to person. However, after the area to be transplanted is numbed, no pain is felt. Thus, a comfortable and relaxed procedure can be performed.
-
How many hours does a beard transplant take?
In principle, it takes 6-7 hours to harvest and transplant 2000 grafts. This process can take between 2 hours and 2 days depending on the amount of grafts to be transplanted. It would be appropriate to divide the processes that exceed 8 hours and 2000 grafts into 2 days and sessions. This is medically correct.
-
Do transplanted beards fall out?
This depends entirely on the strength and quality of the donor area hair. If the donor area roots are strong and do not fall out, they will not fall out in the beard area either. In theory, there will be no shedding in the beards that grow after shock shedding. Minoxidil is also recommended to strengthen weak beards.
