One of the most frustrating periods for patients is the post-hair transplant phase. To achieve the ideal hair look, a few more steps are necessary. However, the recovery process takes a while. Why is this time so challenging? What needs to be taken into account? What are the recommended care steps?

Weekly and Monthly Hair Transplant Progress

Information about the post-hair transplant phase, which begins right away after the procedure and lasts up to 1.5 years is provided on this page. The lengthy process shouldn’t cause you to lose patience. Every patient’s recovery process is unique, so you won’t experience all of the moments mentioned. We suggest that you maintain contact with the clinic where your transplant was performed.

First Days After Hair Transplant (day 1-5)

You depart your house or a hotel after the procedure. Your hair was transplanted. Your nape will be wrapped in the bandage to press the donor area (to avoid bleeding). New grafts that have just been inserted appear blooded. Thankfully, grafts dry quickly. The pain that follows a hair transplant is not severe. Even if there is any pain, it is relieved by taking a mild painkiller. For the first few nights, if at all feasible, use two pillows. Patients occasionally have minimal donor-area bleeding. This is commonplace. You will receive a special pair of sterile pads from the clinic to prevent infections and not to stain the pillow.

2-7 Days After Hair Transplant

The day following a hair transplant, the bandage is removed. We provide the first hair wash at our clinic because we mainly perform pen implanter transplants (1st day after the procedure). On the third or fourth day following surgery, some clinics that use traditional FUE perform the first wash. We strongly advise washing your hair for the first time after surgery at the clinic where you had the therapy. Further information is available on our website, hair wash page.

The most important time after a hair transplant is the first 48 hours. In the epithelialization or rooting phase, the grafts must be handled with particular care to prevent defects. Avoid nobs at all costs. Never lay face down in bed. Patients may swat the pillow with their hair transplants while they sleep. Unfortunately, bleeding in the morning indicates that the grafts have come out.

Following a hair transplant, you can have so-called oedema, or swelling, for 2 to 3 days. Swelling is a common side effect of having hair, and you can learn more about it on the related page. The solution and anesthetic that were infused during the process are to blame for the edema that occurs after hair transplant. Since there is no solution required for the DHI technique, edema is either absent or minimal. After a hair transplant, any swelling you experience will go away in 4-5 days.

You should wash your hair as directed by the clinic staff. In the summer, you can wash it three to four times every day. When you go outside, you should put on a special cap so that it will shield your hair from the sun. Hats with a safari feel are great. Put the hat on gently; do not tug it over your head.

7-10 Days After Hair Transplant. Recovery Period

The regular hair washing will have already cleaned the scabs by this time. Do not be concerned if the scabs are still visible; each patent is still going through its own recovery process. It’s very natural to itch in the donor and recipient locations. Scabs are hardly noticeable in female hair transplants or no-shave hair transplants due to the length of the hair.

After a hair transplant, recovery occurs fairly quickly. Initially following a hair transplant, the recipient area will have scabs that will disappear by the tenth day. Moreover, the donor area heals quite quickly. Scars on the donor area won’t be visible after a hair transplant if it’s done properly.

Any swelling that develops at this time after a hair transplant has to be passed right away. You can be bothered with itching for 15 to 20 days.

Many of our patients are cautious to wash their hair out of concern that the implanted hair might snag. They simply pour water on the head, leaving scabs behind after 10 days. If this applies to you, contact your clinic and ask them to assist you in cleaning the scabs.

15-20 Days After Hair Transplant

The hardest part of the time begins when hair shock loss starts. Patients do not want to psychologically accept hair loss following a transplant. At our website, you can learn all that you need to know about shock hair loss on our website.

Around 15–20 days, itching decreases or stops altogether.

Hair Transplant After 1 Month

The patients’ low mood comes along with an increase in the intensity of shock hair loss. The loss of hair is rapid. Your head may turn a little red after a month. First and second months are when the redness could persist.

How Does the Redness Pass After Hair Transplant?

Redness is an individual complication and differs from person to person. It lasts from 15 days to one month. Patients with light skin typically experience and see it for a longer period of time—roughly 3–4 months. As a way to decrease redness, you should:
  1. Wash your hair with warm water instead of hot
  2. Keep your head away from direct sunlight (take on the hat when going outside)

Consult your clinic if you have extremely aggressive redness. In the donor area, redness can occasionally increase as well. Cortisone-containing creams are quite helpful. Without first consulting your doctor, we do not recommend that you apply any creams or take any medications.

If you had beard hair transplant, the redness would go away more quickly (usually, recovers in 3-4 days). The second month following the procedure is shown in the following image with redness and pimples.

redness after hair transplant
Redness can also result from poor hair transplants. Such complications as folliculitis or skin necrosis can occur in the recipient area. The excessive use of adrenaline, which causes poor blood flow and malnutrition, is the cause of necrosis. There could be permanent redness and color alterations. Necrosis means a dead cell. Hair does not grow in that area. Doctors inject adrenaline, which kills the capillary vessels, during channel method surgeries to prevent bleeding. Adrenaline is not required because pen implanter surgeries have very little bleeding. We have not yet experienced necrosis because of this. Unfortunately, the patient will have to have the affected area surgically amputated if necrosis sets in. It makes sense that patients are frequently unhappy with poor hair transplants or other complications. The photos below show the necrosis that had place in two patients who underwent hair transplants in some neighborhood clinics.

If the donor hair does not fall out, it will also remain the same on the recipient area. If in course of time the hair in the donor area gets weak and falls out, the same happens with transplanted grafts.
